PathwayToLife
Pathway to Life 2025
acrylic paint, oil paint and oil pastels on unstretched canvas, 180cm x 177cm

It’s a very narrow path to an upside-down kingdom - forge forward for the prize ahead. Through the lowest gates, I keep my heart above my head and sing to the unseen. Beware, the watcher is nearer than you think. Perceive the life, find the truth!

Pathway to Life unfolds as a chaotic yet deliberate vision of pain, suffering, and revelation. Figures are suspended in a space where flesh and spirit collide, caught between destruction and redemption. Symbols, gestures, and fragmented forms evoke a world in flux, where the material and the spiritual dissolve into one another, exposing what is usually unseen.

Drawing from biblical allegory and personal reflection, the work explores the paradox of an inverted kingdom, where the lowest gate is the most coveted by some. It is a call to perceive beyond what is seen, to endure amidst uncertainty, and to press onward towards the convergence of chaos and clarity. Let the journey itself become an act of revelation.

Chan’s seven-board series Fight-time is a body of work inspired by the apocalyptic visions of the Book of Revelation. Using acrylic paint, spray paint, oil pastels, and transfer paper, Chan examines humanity’s relationship with chaos, shaped by societal, systemic, and spiritual forces. Scenes of moral and spiritual reckoning unfold through cartoonish human figures - termed ‘men’ - whose desperation and yearning embody the tension between disorder and harmony. In this layered landscape of chaos, Chan ultimately reflects on themes of faith, morality, and humanity’s enduring search for meaning.

Meaningless
Meaningless 2025
acrylic paint, oil paint, oil pastels and spray paint on unstretched canvas, 180cm x 450cm

Meaningless paints dozens of ‘Men’ in a flurry of restless activity - each figure driven by a personal agenda. Drawing from the Book of Ecclesiastes, this network of chaos converges toward a simple yet confounding pursuit: the search for meaning. Suspended between urgency and futility, the figures collide, strive, and unravel within a shared landscape of existential tension. The work questions the nature of labour, purpose, and human striving: Is this our life’s work?

Hi! I'm Germaine. I was born and raised in Singapore, but I now live in Perth, WA. I am currently finishing my last semester of university doing a Bachelor of Psychology and Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Fine Arts and History of Art.

My practice explores the intersection of faith, spirituality, and the human experience, moving between subtle undertones and more explicit reflections. I work across mixed media, including paint, oil pastels, spray paint, and digital processes, combining instinctive approaches with conceptual frameworks.

Rooted in an ongoing curiosity about life's larger questions, my work reflects a personal engagement with belief, doubt, and our shared human experience. Drawing from religious traditions, I reimagine ideas of divinity and the soul through a contemporary lens.
