As creation runs wild, the Spirits watch and meddle, mayhem ensues.
Germaine Chan’s series of mixed media
works In Plain Sight depicts the
co-existence of flesh and spirit in a world where form and physicality
are blurred. The unadorned essence of human nature reveals an innocent
ignorance, reflecting our tendency to be short-sighted and overlook
the deeper forces that govern our lives. Loosely inspired by Biblical
narratives, these works are layered in timeless themes of morality,
faith and divinity, inviting viewers to reflect on their perception
and beliefs.
Through a combination of digital renders, paint, oil
pastels and spray paint, these unique worlds evoke narratives
reminiscent of the romantic period. The artist’s combination of
mediums emphasises the transcendental meshing of soulish and spiritual
realms, dramatising tensions between the unrestrained human and their
underlying guiding forces. It is a precarious illustration of the
illusion of free will, revealing how our choices often dance on the
edge of control, leaving us bound by our own chosen narratives.
